Volunteer responsibly. There are many unethical "eco" companies breeding lion cubs for petting purposes, and then later for walking with tourists; these lions are doomed. Know who the companies are! Contact the ethical volunteering organisations, find out who you can trust, and who genuinely has ethical wildlife credentials. Find them here ...

Learn how CACH started local, and ended up global. Sharpen your animal advocacy skills with a visit to the CACH headquarters, where founder Chris Mercer holds informal discussions and talks on the highlights and experiences of this highly respected NGO. The organisation is based at the Karoo Wildlife Centre in the beautiful Klein Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa. "Today, it's not enough to sign petitions and march in protest - extra tactics and strategies are needed. The lion crisis requires a change in law RIGHT NOW. It's urgent," says Mercer. Africa's lions are in big trouble!

When you next choose to go on safari - and please do, because it is wonderful - go to a safari region where there is no canned hunting; discuss it with your safari planner. If he/she is a true professional, he/she will know where. (For example, Botswana recently cancelled its elephant hunting ban.) All regions offer superb wildlife viewing. Just be sure there is NO lion petting or lion walking offered. See Africa's lions; living free.

Talk. Talk about it to friends, family, colleagues. Google 'canned lion hunting', understand the scale of this sordid animal treatment, and if you do nothing else ... just talk. Talk about it; write to your favourite news channel. Share your thoughts with others. Bring the subject up - this all helps to bring the subject into the open, to shine light on this hidden, ugly (but still legal) activity. Every chat, every post, is a voice for the thousands of caged lions. Speak out for the lions.
