Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH)

Christine Jordaan's message

Christine Jordaan, South Africa, is the originator of the idea to have a global march for lions.
She writes:

"In September 2013 I happened upon an article by Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH) and started reading up on Canned Hunting.

The horrific reality was almost too much to take in.

I thought a worldwide march would be a brilliant way to raise awareness in the general public AND to show governments that there is a HUGE number of people out there across the world who will no longer be silent regarding hunting and the cruelty involved.

Quite simply we want trophy and canned hunting banned. I believe we have NO right whatsoever to decide when an animal dies. They are not here for us to use, to sell their lives. It would be pure arrogance to believe otherwise.

Our goals are to have trophy and canned hunting banned; to get lions on the Endangered Species List where they belong, to stop the export of lion bones to China, to stop the import of lion trophies in to USA and EU.

We need the world to stand together and call for a new gentler way of living here on Earth in harmony with all the other species which have just as much right to be here as we do. We have all the technology we need to co-exist peacefully - we just lack the willpower.

I hope that the march will make people think about how we are treating all the animals and the question of whether its right to kill an animal for fun. Is it right to breed lions to be shot? What kind of person shoots an animal in a cage for pleasure? It is a manifestation of a sick society. We have been taught to block it out. And that hunting is conservation. Nonsense. That is the system that the hunters themselves have set up. We need a new system.

I like to think that most people have good hearts. We desperately need for these people to stop looking the other way, to unblock their minds to the screams of the animals. The animals cannot vote for a system that is fair to them. They are relying completely and utterly on the compassion and integrity of the human species. If people would still their minds for a second, close their eyes, shut out the deliberate stimulation of the over-consumption culture we have engineered... and imagine the world through the consciousness of the animals... bred to be shot for fun, eaten, worn, for entertainment. Living in pain and misery then dying an agonizing death.

How can you not march?

When its time for the sun to set and you look back at your life one day - wouldn't you be bitterly ashamed of ignoring the horrific reality of the animals or would you like to know that you tried to end the terrible suffering our species has wrought on them. "

I'm in for the Los Angeles walk. Check out pet lions, tigers, hyenas, primates etc in places like Qatar, Dubai it makes me sick! These animals are roaming palaces and they're transported to these idiots in small cages in the boiling heat! Most die in transport. It's very sad and disturbing.

Me and mine will be there. I've spread the word,This is just disgusting, people need to be aware. Any kind of hunting is wrong but this is another level of animal abuse.

Thankyou everybody for your kind comments above. Especially on dark days like today when there seems to be pictures of slaughtered animals everywhere. You help me keep the faith. Much love, Christine

Hello, I am deeply heartened by the expressive manner of your lovely thoughts. I live in Dublin, Ireland. I don't know if anyone in Dublin is organizing such a march and I would like to be a part of such consciousness-raising. We had what was termed a 'Celtic Tiger' it referred to an economic rise. I deplored this title. It was so ridiculous. Anyhow, I can't see why we couldn't have a 'Celtic Lion' in the sense in which it would be a meaningful gesture of affinity with your noble cause. I would certainly be proud to carry a poster reflecting such an important commitment. I can't think of a better reason, during St. Patrick's week festival, to carry such a message.

Hi Linda, that is wonderful to think of beautiful green Ireland marching. Thankyou
And world - even if there is not a march happening in your city, please mail or drop off your thoughts at your closest South African embassy. Europeans and Americans especially, please lobby for a ban on import of lion trophies. Teachers - please get your class to write to President Zuma, c/o your SA consulate. And most of all everybody spread the word of this atrocity. Thanku!!

Congratulations for this great initiative, and I heard the inspirational Chris Mercer interviewed on radio. John Rendall and I bought Christian the lion at Harrods in 1969 and by a miracle returned him to Kenya for his successful rehabilitation, overseen by George Adamson. John spoke at the March in London, and I spoke in Sydney. What is the next step to keep the momentum going? Apparently August 10 is World Lion Day.

Ace we are going to march again on World Animal Day 4th Oct. We dumped World Lion Day because it is too closely aligned with hunting:
The Global March for Lions was done for one reason only – to ban canned hunting. We focus on that because it is a huge and powerful industry and it needs to be focused upon if we are going to succeed in ending this cruel industry.

We are concerned about wild lion populations because, as we explain ourselves to conservation authorities, the canned lion industry is a direct threat to wild lion populations. CACH’s mandate is to focus on getting the canned hunting industry closed down. If we were to divert our attention away from captive breeding, our effort would be diluted.
We cannot allow that to happen.
The only reason we wanted to organise events on 10th August is that we saw another opportunity to get our message out, to ban canned lion hunting and to put more pressure on conservation authorities and the SA government. Our focus if we did anything with WLD would be on canned hunting.

There seems to be insufficient overlap of our goals. For example, WLD does not seem to be against trophy hunting, indeed, some of their supporters are pro hunting organisations. To our consternation, we read that WLD regards ALERT as a deserving charity.

Please continue to put a stop to canned and Trophy hunting. Keep the momentum going.
Let's keep this alive.
We need to engage President Zuma in a dialogue and pressurise him globally. This is a totally barbaric practice.
I can find no response to Linda Tucker's letter from the Global Protection for the White Lions Trust.

Hi Gillian
