In August 2015 I decided I wanted
to raise money for the Karoo Wildlife Centre opened by the owners of the Campaign Against Canned Hunting, Chris and Bev. I decided to hold a fundraiser show in Camden and donate all money to the centre, which is currently in the process of being built! The run up was hectic and I was rushed off my feet for weeks, but I’m so glad I did it because it turned out to be a huge success!

Responsible Tourism - the best way to conserve African wildlife

We at CACH realised many years ago that we were wasting our time trying to get South African conservation structures to preserve wildlife.  We knew that by suffocating conservation under a murderous policy called 'sustainable use' the hunting fraternity has successfully hijacked conservation. Google 'regulatory capture' and you'll be shocked to see how routine it is for Big Business to invade and occupy its own regulatory structures to ensure that they become impotent.  See for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulatory_capture
So what to do when SA conservation services have been perverted in to an arm of the hunting industry, and our conservation funds in to a subsidy for Big Hunting.
We decided to focus on cutting off the source of money flows that sustain this ghastly form of environmental terrorism.  That meant engaging seriously and meaningfully with the global tourism industry.  Educate tour operators on the link between cub petting and canned hunting, and they'll dissuade their tourists from indulging in this profitable spin-off for lion farmers.
We've been working at this for years, and the ban by most airlines on carriage of hunting trophies is one success story.  Our sustained efforts have been recognised by World Travel, and CACH was shortlisted for the prestigious award of Best International Animal Welfare Initiative.
The first week of November is World Travel week in London, and the award ceremony, a glittering celebrity-laden showpiece, took place in London on Wednesday 4th November 2015.
In addition, we were invited to participate in the Wildlife and National Parks panel by World Responsible Travel organisation, in London on 3rd November.
CACH UK leader and retired lawyer David Nash represented us on that panel, and the two memes above are drawn from his presentation.
