Claws Out started in early 2015 after Beth Jennings spent time in South Africa volunteering with lion cubs. At the time she was unaware that over 1,000 lions are being killed legally every year in so called “canned hunts”. Captive bred lions are raised by humans in cub petting facilities around South Africa, where tourists pay to volunteer without the knowledge of where these lions will spend their adult lives. There are only 15,000 lions left in Africa and they are already extinct in 42% of African countries. At the current rate of poaching and canned hunting, lions will be extinct in 10 years.
This campaigning has led Claws Out to work with an organisation called the Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH). CACH are the charity at the forefront of protecting Africa’s remaining lions and have recently opened a much needed wildlife sanctuary in the Klein Karoo, South Africa. The money raised from the Claws Out event is being donated directly to CACH to help them finish the sanctuary and they are so grateful for the help.
All the bands involved are so excited to support Claws Out for this charity night and raise money for such worthy cause.
