Comprehensive list of tourism destinations prepared by Carmen Berdan and her team at Volunteers in Africa Beware. One could quibble about some of the detail but it is an extremely important guide to ethical tourism - the only one, we think. Well done Carmen.

Have you any information on African Dawn Sanctuary, which is between Port Elizabeth and Jefferys Bay? It's apparently a sanctuary where they have a number of cheetahs for breeding as well small cats, and many animals that needed a home for one reason or another. It's beautifully kept and their main source of income and assistance is a large volunteering programme, with volunteers staying on site. A friend went there - they have agencies that feed them with volunteers. There is a massive aviary containing literally thousands of birds all in there together (I thought birds were territorial?), blue cranes in rather small cages, crocodiles. A friend went there for the afternoon and found an area at the back with piles of dead chickens (food for something) but they were allowing live hens to walk all around the same area over the dead bodies. I was surprised this place wasn't on your list. I was wondering where the cheetah offspring go when they grow up.
